One year of Trina Hydrogen Spain: building Europe’s hydrogen backbone from Madrid

Date:2026.04.29

One year ago, Trina Green Hydrogen took a decisive step in its European strategy by establishing its Spanish subsidiary in Madrid. The ambition was clear from day one: not just to open a local commercial office, but to create a true Centre of Excellence capable of structuring, deploying and scaling hydrogen projects across the European Union.

Twelve months later, that vision has materialized into a fully operational hub. From Madrid, Trina Hydrogen Spain now coordinates commercial, technical and operational activities across Europe, acting as a bridge between global industrial capabilities and the specific regulatory and market requirements of the EU. This positioning has been critical in a region where hydrogen is not only a technology challenge, but also a regulatory, financial and industrial integration exercise.

A key priority during this first year has been the rapid construction of a robust European ecosystem. On the supply side, the company has built a network of more than 30 qualified partners, covering critical equipment, engineering and services. On the demand side, engagement has expanded to over 100 potential clients across multiple sectors, with numerous RFQs submitted and a growing number of qualifications achieved with leading industrial players. This dual expansion reflects a deliberate strategy: to anchor both ends of the value chain early, ensuring bankability and execution capacity.

In parallel, a significant effort has been dedicated to adapting internal processes to European standards. More than 30 procedures have been reviewed and aligned with EU regulatory frameworks, spanning contractual structures, long-term service agreements (LTSA), service level agreements (SLA), quality systems, environmental compliance, risk management and maintenance protocols. This work, often invisible from the outside, is in fact one of the most critical enablers for operating in Europe, where compliance and traceability are as important as technology performance.

Execution has also moved forward decisively. The company has already launched its first European project, a hydrogen refueling station in Portugal, marking the transition from market entry to delivery. At the same time, a pipeline of additional projects is advancing toward execution (5 more projects in delivery process in Europe), reinforcing Trina’s positioning not only as a technology provider, but as a reliable project partner.

Strategic partnerships have played a central role in accelerating this progress. Collaboration agreements with companies such as Clantech in HRS standard solutions, have strengthened local engineering, operation and maintenance capabilities, ensuring product reliability and safety above the adoption of potentially more efficient, but not yet fully mature, technologies.

One of the most significant milestones of the year has been the development of a 160 MW green hydrogen project in Huelva, to be considered FID in the end of 2026. In parallel, the company has planned a 500 MW electrolyzer manufacturing facility in Spain. Together, these initiatives signal a clear commitment to industrialization in Europe, moving beyond project development into local manufacturing and long-term value creation.

Beyond projects and partnerships, Trina Hydrogen Spain has actively contributed to shaping the European hydrogen landscape. Participation in major industry events such as Hannover Messe, EHEC and H2V has reinforced its visibility, while alignment with strategic initiatives like the H2Med Southwest Hydrogen Corridor Alliance positions the company at the heart of future hydrogen infrastructure development. These platforms are essential not only for business development, but also for influencing the evolution of the market itself.

Quality, certification and credibility have been another cornerstone of this first year. The company has secured key certifications and validations from internationally recognized bodies such as DNV and DEKRA, alongside compliance with CE marking and ISO standards required for operation within the European Union. These certifications are not merely formalities; they are critical signals to clients, EPCs and financiers that the technology meets the highest standards of safety, performance and reliability. In parallel, Trina Green Hydrogen has been recognized in industry forums for efficiency and innovation, reinforcing its positioning as a credible and competitive player in a rapidly evolving sector.

Looking forward, the company is now taking the next step: consolidating Spain as a true innovation and knowledge hub. The launch of a Competence Center will enable advanced technical training, foster R&D initiatives with European partners and support continuous improvement of products and solutions. This initiative reflects a long-term commitment to Europe, not only as a market, but as a center for innovation and industrial development.

In just one year, Trina Hydrogen Spain has evolved from a market entrant into a structured, credible and forward-looking organization. The foundations are now in place: a strong ecosystem, a growing project pipeline, industrial ambitions and full regulatory alignment.
The next phase is about scale.

Trina Hydrogen Spain is ready to play a key role in enabling Europe’s hydrogen economy, delivering integrated, reliable and cost-effective solutions that support the continent’s path to net zero.
